My Pick from WLB: Miss Representation

There were a lot of reasons I enjoyed yesterday's Women's Legislative Briefing, including serving on a panel about women in elected office with my friends, Nancy Navarro and Valerie Ervin. The Commission for Women always does a terriffic job with this event, and I particularly enjoyed the screening of Miss Representation, a documentary film that exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. While watching the film, I was stuck by how much our economy depends on selling goods at the expense of women and girls. If you haven't had a chance to see it yet, I encourage you to check it out, or you can see a list of the statistics featured in the film.

You blame the media for the "under-representation of women in positions of power and influence" but the very Council that you sit on does very little for women and children in this county. No affordable housing. No jobs programs. No homelessness prevention. It's all smoke and mirrors. The only thing that the Council women do is shine the signs on their doors that say they are council members. Very disingenuous. I'm really ashamed to say I even live in this county, and certainly would never hold any woman on the council up as a model of power and influence. I think the term would be "resume padders."

Ms. Gambrell- I regret that you feel this way. I would be pleased to sit down with you and share what we are doing in the areas of support for women and children, job training, affordable housing and homelessness prevention. Best, Nancy
